Are the peak and off-peak seasons?

Like most areas in the UK, there is a peak summer season for holiday lettings when the schools have broken up and families come to spend time together walking and enjoying all that the Dales has to offer. However, a lot of serious walkers and holidayers without children and not tied to the school calendar, will come and stay in the Yorkshire Dales throughout the year.

What brings people to the Area?

The key attraction for most is the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where there are endless miles of footpaths to walk and stunning scenery to enjoy.

The famous three peaks are found within the Dales, Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. Whether walkers are hoping to complete the three summits in the classic 12-hour challenge or simply reach the top of one of them, these hills bring many keen walkers to the area.

There are also a great number of other attractions for those who want to holiday and enjoy the scenery but are not keen to climb the hills. Here are just a few of the other attractions in the Dales:

Waterfalls

Aysgarth Falls has been a tourist attraction for over 200 years and were used in a scene in the movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.

Ingleton Waterfall Walk is a circular 4.3-mile walk and takes in some of the most spectacular waterfalls in the National Park.

Rocks, Coves & Caves

Malham Cove is a cliff of limestone 70m high. Formed along the middle craven fault it has been eroded by water and ice over millions of years.

Brimham Rocks located on National Trust land are dramatic moorland rock formations that are both amazing to look at and fun to climb and explore.

White Scar Cave is the UK’s longest show cave in Britain. All visitors are guided through the 1 miles long cave and will view some impressing formations of stalagmites and stalactites.

Historical Architecture

Ribblehead Viaduct is a stunning piece of Victorian architecture. Situated in the middle of the three peaks and running along the Settle to Carlisle railway line it creates a truly iconic scene in the Dales.

Fountains Abbey now recognised as a World Heritage Site will take you back to the medieval world of monks and whilst adults enjoy the tranquillity, children can enjoy a quiz trail.

Unique Attractions of the Dales

The Forbidden Corner is an unusual attraction – it’s strapline is ‘the strangest place in the World’ – but it is a fun day out for old and young.

Wensleydale Creamery based in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales produces the famous Wensleydale cheese. With cheese-making demonstrations a viewing gallery as well as a coffee and gift shop, it’s a great day out for all, especially if you need an indoor activity.

What Cities and Towns are in the Area?

Richmond

Located in the North East of the Dales, Richmond has grown over the years around the castle and has changed little through the centuries. The skyline of Richmond is dominated by the Keep which towers above the town at 100 feet.

But far from being stuck in the past, Richmond has a strong community and a huge range of events taking place. On Saturdays, the Market is held on the famous cobble market place, whilst the Market Hall is open 7-days a week and hosts different markets daily with all sorts of crafts and gifts on offer.

York

The city of York is a must-see for those in the Yorkshire Dale area. Just an hour’s drive from the Dales it is full of visitor attractions including the famous York Minister – the largest medieval gothic cathedral north of the Alps; Clifford’s Tower –  the only surviving part of York castle; an amazing collection of locomotives at the National Railway Museum; the York Art Gallery – some of the best ceramic art in the world; the York Dungeon where some of York’s darker history comes back to life; as well as York’s very own chocolate story
